Owned by Rosemary Prock, Sow’s Ear Studio is Located at 1597 Union Street, Schenectady. The ribbon cutting was sponsored by McNamee, Titus, Lochner & Williams, PC.

Rosemary has worked as a self-employed graphic designer for many years, but about 13 years ago started to lose her zest for the work. With a background in fine arts, she began picking up odd pieces of furniture and painting them, which began a natural evolution for her. People started buying these painted pieces, and her wonderfully supportive husband said, “You know, there could be a business here.” And so, Sow’s Ear Studio began.

In the beginning, the shop was mainly a studio space because Rosemary had run out of room at home for working on larger pieces of furniture. About three years ago, her daughter Lauren, a polymer clay artist, joined her in the business. They are now able to keep the shop open on a regular schedule. Since that time, they have expanded their retail business to include not only their work, but also that of at least 15 other local artists. They opened the upstairs gallery about a year ago to provide a venue for local artists to show their work in a more defined space.

The driving force of Sow’s Ear Studio is the custom decorative painting. Most of Rosemary’s work lies in the homes of Capital Region residents and beyond in the form of murals, faux finishes and handpainted furniture. Sow’s Ear Studio now offers a selection of workshops in polymer clay, drawing, digital photography and crochet.

Rosemary has lived in Niskayuna for 25 years and has always love Upper Union Street District. When she saw the space available she seized the opportunity. “It’s a great place to have a business,” she said.

Sow’s Ear Studio is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and is closed Sundays.

Sandi Graham and Ginit Marten


Opens at Sow’s Ear Studio & Gallery, 1597 Union St., Schenectady, Friday, June 17 with a 4pm “Ribbon Cutting” by the Chamber of Schenectady County and a reception from 4 – 8pm.  The Art Show opening continues through the Upper Union Street Strawberry Fest & Art Show on June 18.  The show continues through July 29.

Sow’s Ear Studio & Gallery owner, Rosemary Prock, herself an artist, met Sandi Graham and Ginit Marten through the gallery’s recent salon show “Rebirth! The Coming of Spring.”

“The salon show was an opportunity for us to meet new artists through their work.  This is the first of several shows that will have evolved from that experience,” said Rosemary Prock.  “I saw something in common between Sandi and Ginit, their approach to the artistic process, their vision, and their tranquil, harmonious creative themes.  The two are distinctly individual yet somehow mutual.  It’s a great fit!”

Sow’s Ear Studio & Gallery is open Monday through Saturday 10:30 am thru 5 pm.  Work is available for purchase. Admission is free.  For further information contact Rosemary Prock at 518 370-2042.
